Why are midterms so hard?!?! teachers are so impossible. I'm not trying to be mean, but they try to cram in all of this new stuff before the midterms so you just end up teaching yourself all this new stuff! SOMEONE give me a decent reason for midterms being so hard.

um..to give us more stuff to complain about, to make us study stuff, for more tests for us to fail because we didnt study and/or pay attention, and to bore us to death.

enough reasons for you? i believe i could think of a few more

Some colleges require teachers to post midterm grades -- sometimes the midterm exam is the only way to generate that number. It lets students know how they are doing in the course, and tells you how hard to work in the second half.

Plus, it tests your knowledge on the material in a timely manner. That way, you have an exam over material right after you've studied it, rather than months later.

Sometimes they are hard because the material is hard, and it's stuff that may be foundational to the second half of the course.

If the teachers are running out of time to teach things in class, that may be poor scheduling, but they must think you have to get through some of it before the second half of the semester.

Finally, college is supposed to be hard. If it were easy, everyone would do it.

Midterms are what is said in the word "midterm" they are grades you receive to let you know where you are, so, when finals come you can change your grade. for instance, once in english i had a 80 in midterms, but, i stepped up, talked to my teacher, and studied harder. before i thought i was doing well, so, for not the midterms, i would have an 80 still. my final grade came to be a 89 and i was very happy that i did get my midterm. The teachers just want to strenghthen your ability and to make you do your very best. Just take a deep breath and study! Good luck!

It sounds like you are having problems with teachers not the idea of midterms. midterms are to make sure that you are staying on track and not falling way behind. I have had plenty of midterms where the teacher did not cram in a bunch of extra material before the test.

Weeds out the better students? Actually I use them only to make sure I don't get any big surprises at finals.

I sometimes think a student is understanding and doing okay, but test anxiety and poor time management rears its ugly head at final time.

It's rather like practice for deadlines and trying times throughout life. See if the teacher can give you any practice midterms before the real thing.

The reason midterms are so hard are to weed out those people who aren't getting it. And it is timing too, because 1-the teacher wont keep spending time helping students who aren't going to get it anyways, and who arent committed, and 2-in college if you drop out at midterms, you can usually get out with a "W" withdraw, rather than an "F" that goes into your GPA.

Same thing as finals. To see what you have learned. Have you ever thought that the final would be twice as hard if you didn't take the first half it it on the midterm?
