I'm trying to get a job at sports authority but I'm not sure whether to apply online or personally call and ask if there's openings and if I can pick up an application

The latter option is the much more preferred option. Make sure you know the hours and when they are busy so that you can ask when they are not busy. Also, anytime you step out your door, you should be dressed for an interview. You never know who you'll run into. So if you're unshaven and dressed like a slob, there's no telling how many potential jobs you've just passed by.

Nowadays, you usually have to do it online even if you already know the manager and that they have a position open. If the place is a big business with multiple locations that probably need an online application, but if they are small and don't need one, then I suggest you go in person first. If they already require an online application than I suggest applying online first, then going in.
It's easy to find out, just check out their website and look for a hiring or employment link.

You should ask for an application and give it to the manager so he or she knows your interest. Online applications do not always actually get submitted. They tend to not get seen by anyone, or they take a while to actually get to the store you're looking to work at.
