zip codes on envelopes, one number off?
?

I just mailed a letter to my friend from out of state. When he told me his address he accidently told me that the zip code was 29560. The actual zip code is 29569. The last number that i put on the letter is a zero when it should be a nine. Everything like the address, town, and state are correct on the letter. Do you think my letter will still make it to my friend? Or will the wrong zip code make it get lost? Or maybe the letter will get returned to me? I'm really not sure. I mailed it before i figured out the right zip code. Any ideas on what will happen?

Well.

Its a 50/50 Chance here.

Sometimes if there is no address in that Zip code Area corresponding to the address you put on the envelope then it will most likely get sent back to you.

But if there is an address in that Zip Code area. Chances are it will get sent to that house. and they will probably send it back to the post office to be sent back to the sender.

Or it could just get lost in the system.

I hope i helped a little :]

The minimum address information is a name and zip code. This applies only to large institutions that have a zip code all to themselves. For zip codes with too many names and addresses for this, a street address and zip code will do. Zip codes incorporate "city" (actually, postal delivery zone) and state, and the plus four numbers encode an actual delivery location within the zip code, so it is actually possible to deliver mail to a location, but not a person, with nothing but zip plus four. However, mail is by law deliverable to the named person, and it is a violation of Federal law to open mail addressed to someone else, so an addressee name (e.g., Occupant) is a formal legal requirement. USPS does not have or want to have an official minimum address data requirement, nor do they want the public omitting data from the envelope that could be used to complete delivery if the label is damaged or smeared.

IT WILL GET TO YOUR FRIEND. AND IF THE POST OFFICE DOES NOT FIND THE STREET NAME AND ADDRESS YOU WILL GET IT BACK.

IVE MAILED ITEMS WITH NO ZIP CODE AT ALL AND THEY GOT TO THEIR DESTINATION:)
