Thats precisely the same question I asked one of my friend. She suggested me to talk to Armadillo Consultants.com.

She was working as a Business Analyst and had experience working in Project environment and was interested to become Project manager as she progressed her career upwards. After one of her own friend suggested to armadillo consultants. She inquired the same question. With a practical training course & practical project management situations exercise along with deep book knowledge, she got trained by armadillo and today she works with one of the large companies as a Project Manager. I heard from here, she not only got the practical simulated experience but also she became a PMP along with the resume & job interview cracking guidance by Armadillo. This boosted her to put here practical experience in shape to get the PM job.

Armadillo also runs a training course just for the same purpose - Become a Project Manager.

I would recommend you to go pick their PMP training course - that also includes the "Become a project manager" guidance.

Here are the sources you can see the course outlines:

Become a project manager:

PMP training:

I think you can also check their complete offerings on Project management here, they look great experts and also call themselves project management subject matter.

If you are sure that you absolutely want to be a project manager, then yes the PMP certification will help you stand out. You still need the experience on a certain number of projects to put on your application to apply for certification. The certification will benefit you, especially in IT.

I don't think you can actually become a manager by reading stuff and observing things because the real teacher is experience and you've got to get into a manger's boots to know what it takes to become a good manager. My older brother had been working at his firm for about 3 years when he was finally promoted as a manager but even with so much experience at hand he faced a lot of difficulties. He used to be very frustrated when he returned home in the evening and we used to check online for managing guidelines and tips and tricks like http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00LBFO6UI. He finally got settled and he's so happy now. Wish you similar luck for future.
