The congruent symbol is an equals sign (=) with a tilde (~) above it.
.
It is NOT in the symbol menu in MS Word.
.
Does anyone know how to type this?
.
If not, then does anyone know where it has already been typed so I can copy it?
.
Thanks.

The symbol is in Unicode. But to type it, you need to have a font that contains it.

The Cambria Math font in Windows Vista and Window 7 has it. If you don’t have this font, and even if you do, I recommend downloading and installing the free Stix fonts which have lots, and lots of mathematical characters. They are available from http://www.stixfonts.org/ .

The symbol ≅ in Unicode is called “APPROXIMATELY EQUAL TO”. See http://www.fileformat.info/info/unicode/char/2245/index.htm . Its Unicode value is U+2245. Set your current font to a font that contains the character and in Word type 2245 and immediately afterwards press down on the left Alt key and type x, then release the Alt key. You can type any Unicode character in Word in this fashion.

All current Unicode characters and their id numbers are to be found in the official Unicode charts of charts at http://www.unicode.org/charts/ . You will find ≅ in this Unicode block: http://www.unicode.org/charts/PDF/U2200.pdf .
