A levels need for Paleontology & Archaeology or Egyptology & Archaeology?

I would really like to study either Paleontology & Archaeology or Egyptology & Archaeology, or maybe just one of the three at university but I'm unsure as to what A levels I would need to do this.

I know History would be needed and as 6th forms in my area don't offer an archaeology A level I would need to get work experience of doing that, but apart from those two things I'm not sure? How necessary is a science? I can see how one would be useful, such as chemistry, but it's not one of my strong points and I'm not sure how I'd cope at A level.

Any other ideas about what subjects I should look at?

I don't know the specifics of the school levels in your area, but I am an archaeologist.



Archaeology and Paleontology are generally separate and do not overlap. If your interested in Paleontology (dinosaurs, extinct animals, etc), you need to take a lot of biology classes, and geology is good too. For archaeology (study of the human past), history is obviously important, especially history of what time period you want to focus on. Archaeology is usually considered part of anthropology, so you'll want to look for both archaeology classes and other anthropology classes. A science like chemistry isn't that important, unless you want to specialize in being a curator. Geography and GIS relate to archaeology too.



To go into archaeology, it'll be important to take an archaeological field school at some point. You can also looking into volunteering at an archaeological site to get an idea of what fieldwork is like.

The best way to check would be to go online to a uni that does the course and see what you need. But I have to say when I had only read the first part of your question, science is the one thing that came to my mind. Or you could talk to a school careers adviser but they won't have the info to hand as it is not a common or popular career.
