Question:
I know it is strange but-have you ever studied the dictionary?

I know this an awkwardly random and strange question, but I feel curious to ask if any of you have REALLY studied 100% of either the Unabridged American Heritage dictionary or Merriam Webster's 3rd new international unabridged dictionary. Please be honest. If you did...why?

It is funny to learn other people do this too. Family and friends have sort of made fun of me for it, but I have my reasons. First, I did it for a spelling bee and then second I wanted to expand my vocabulary. I love to read and it is quite difficult to read when you are younger and don't have a large vocabulary. The way to understand what I read was by looking up all the words I didn't understand and then writing down the definition and using it in context for other things. So, if you have studied either version (I have used both as well as in other languages) don't feel weird or nerdy, I have too.

Nah I have the HUGE dictionary so I don't think I would have time. I'd forget most of it anyways.

But I'll admit, sometimes I feel like I am one of the few people left that actually looks up words in the dictionary....seems like most people now are too lazy to do that so they use the online one or ask someone else or don't bother at all. I will look up any word I come across reading that I don't understand, though. And if I hear someone use an unfamiliar word in a conversation then I'll probably remember it and go home and look it up later but I think I have good enough English to be able to use context clues also.

I've never really studied it, but I do enjoy reading it because I like learning about words and their meanings. There's that thought question that asks, "If you were marooned on a deserted island what three books would you like to have with you?" One of my answers is a dictionary.

I've read the entire dictionary. I was bored in my study class, and I always like to expand my vocabulary so over the course of a month I've finished the entire dictionary, needless to say I don't remember MOST of it. ;)

I'm working on it.

David Tidmarsh, 2004 spelling champ, studied it.

I love the meaning of words. Their history. I have not read it straight through but I have read and studied it a little at a time. No not 100%.
